I find it hard to believe my little doodle just turned two. It has been quite the journey nurturing this fiery lassie with red hair and green eyes.

I truly believed she was going to be a kitchen doodle getting in my way and begging for scraps from the countertop. Instead, she is a supervisor glancing at me from her perch on the living room couch.

In fact, she is a picky eater which can be a challenge to this home cook. I feed my family with love; she eats when she gets hungry. It has been a humbling experience for me, but it also taught me a basic lesson to not be food centric by defined mealtimes of the day if you are not hungry. I cannot complain about losing a few pounds and being more active thanks to my “coach!”

I could tell Mardi Gras season ended when Big Guy started asking for Louis Armstrong’s Red Beans and Rice. We had our first taste of it in New Orleans and now it is an annual staple @carondeletkitchen.  Louis Armstrong loved this particular dish so much that he often signed his letters:  “Red Beans and Rice-ly Yours, Louis.”  Could he possibly be any cooler?

We stopped by @legrandsmarket to get Ozark ham along with @zatarains rice. Big Guy had already ordered the @camelliabeans and had them soaking in water, so it was time to put the meal together.

As Louis Armstrong played songs in the background, Big Guy doubled checked the recipe found @nytimescooking. It takes four hours as you layer the flavors and you want to give it time to meld into a pot of deliciousness, but I promise you it is worth the labor. It is also wonderful to freeze since I guarantee you will have leftovers!

The work continues at the Carondelet Cottage, so it was time to head out the door for a fun activity. We headed to @mobotgarden to check out the Orchid Show as we knew it was closing soon. It was a spectacular display, as always, with hundreds of blooming orchids.

We also stopped by @littleshopmbg to check out the latest treasures. If you have not stopped here, it is an antique and collectibles shop that resells vintage items donated to the @mobotgarden. It is a fantastic way to give back a little more to the Garden’s research and educational goals while helping you add something special to your home.

We headed to @pietrosstl for happy hour but had to make one more stop @seriessixcompany to check out their St. Louis inspired apparel. It was the perfect way to toast our hard work while staying local for a fun filled afternoon.

I grew up in a small town south of Detroit, so you would think I would be well-versed in Detroit-Style Pizza. Unfortunately, I am so old, the only Detroit pizza I knew was Little Caesar’s!

I love history, but I somehow missed the talk on 20th century automotive workers originally making this pizza in rectangular steel trays designed for use as automotive drip pans. The creators of this pizza reversed engineered it with cheese and pepperoni layered on top of the thick crust followed by rows of sauce and more pepperoni to give the pizza a caramelized texture.

I am excited to add this recipe to my @carondeletkitchen mix. It is time to play my 70’s rock and “take the midnight train going anywhere” while remembering my childhood in Detroit!

Big Guy and I had errands to run today but decided lunch and a little antiquing could be a nice reward for our efforts. After a quick stop @southsidetruevaluehardware, we headed to Kirkwood.

We needed coffee so we had to stop at Cornucopia. The store is my favorite place to explore for kitchen items, and I never fail to buy more than was on my list.

We had worked up a hunger, so our lunch spot was @mikeduffys. It is always a great meal with friendly service. I tucked into their Buffalo Chicken Wrap with blue cheese dressing. The chicken was crispy and the wrap perfectly balanced with hot sauce, lettuce, and cheese. Big Guy opted for the BBQ Chicken Sandwich. He, too, felt his meal was perfect!

We walked off our lunch by visiting @warson_woods_gallery followed by a quick stop @schnuckmarkets. Whew! It was a full day, but as usual, we got a lot done while having fun!
