Is there any honor larger than being asked to mentor young people? Big Guy and I met with three young men studying at Saint Louis University regarding community outreach and ways to give back to their community.

We suggested we meet at @cravestl so the commute would be easy on them. If you have not been there, it is housed in an old church which gives their mission statement, “we aim to serve with intention and to serve with greatness,” a higher meaning to their business.

We opted to get the coffee special of the day along with two outstanding breakfast items, Brunch on the Hill and a Tower Grove Stroll. It was the perfect combination to enhance a wonderful conversation with students who are ready to rise in their studies and their futures.

JOHN D. MCGURK’S IRISH PUB AND GARDEN

Big Guy and I love to support our local restaurants, and it seems we tend to gravitate to @johndmcgurks in the quiet of the winter more often than in the summer. Please do not misunderstand, we absolutely love their garden with its wonderful flowers and water feature, but nothing beats a lovely meal with an Irish beer listening to the perfect blend of Irish music while sitting in the pub.

Big Guy was craving potato soup, so we headed to McGurk’s to enjoy their traditional version, Mrs. McAteer’s Potato Soup. It is such a comforting cup or bowl of potato goodness. Big Guy rounded out his meal with Fish and Chips with his Guinness, and I enjoyed the Bacon Wrapped Shrimp with my Harp. It was the comfort food we craved on a chilly day, and it hit the mark with its usual outstanding service and food!

MRS. KRISHNAN'S PARTY @REPSTL

Our city is rich with cultural opportunities guided by passionate and enthusiastic people who genuinely love their work. Is it really work if you love what you do?

Big Guy and I have rediscovered shows @repstl under the leadership of @sirdannywilliams and @mx.kate_bergstrom who embody the love of theater and Saint Louis. Thanks to a conversation with them, I was excited to hear about their current show, "Mrs. Krishnan’s Party" brought to the Lou through @indianinktheatrecompany.

I highly recommend you come out and see this “dinner of dahl” and show. Yes, the audience is given a taste of the food by Mrs. Krishnan at the end of the performance. It is an immersive experience with strong encouragement to be part of the show at your comfort level. You will soon not forget the party atmosphere thanks to the outstanding work of its two performers, Kalyani Nagarajan and Justin Te Honihana Pokaihau Rogers.

We even had the joy of watching two friends become part of the performance to assist with the cooking and create their own memorable moment. It was an absolute joy to be part of this experience!

HANGING OUT WITH @THEREALMONICAADAMS

Ok, so I did this thing. I had the pleasure of hanging out with @therealmonicaadams to be part of her “Foodie Friday” show. Monica reached out to me through IG, but Saint Louis being Saint Louis, we quickly realized we knew the same people and even both participated separately on Cynthia Kirkpatrick’s @sheliftproject.

It was so much fun to share a family recipe with Monica. It was my Grandma Mueller’s Cool Whip Dessert, which lives on through its third generation of home cooks with the hope it will still be made moving into the next generation. As Monica said, it is important we talk with our relatives and learn these recipes so, we too, can learn to cook with love!

TORTILLA SOUP

Big Guy and I were talking about what soups to make as we continue into the winter months. I had been focusing on beef soups, so we started to discuss our favorite chicken-based soups and tortilla soup jumped to the top of the list.

Tortilla soup was one of the first soups I made after we got married which I adapted from a recipe by @emeril. I tend to be brave with my spices, so I know one variation to the recipe was the addition of jalapenos and ancho chilis which gives the soup an earthy heat that is not too powerful.

I also took a cue from @inagarten and bought @rosalitasstl cheese sauce, salsa, and tortilla chips. We also bought a small container of guacamole since the avocados were not ripe. We layered the ingredients on top of the soup and enjoyed a lovely meal.
