I grew up in a small town south of Detroit, so you would think I would be well-versed in Detroit-Style Pizza. Unfortunately, I am so old, the only Detroit pizza I knew was Little Caesar’s!
I love history, but I somehow missed the talk on 20th century automotive workers originally making this pizza in rectangular steel trays designed for use as automotive drip pans. The creators of this pizza reversed engineered it with cheese and pepperoni layered on top of the thick crust followed by rows of sauce and more pepperoni to give the pizza a caramelized texture. I am excited to add this recipe to my @carondeletkitchen mix. It is time to play my 70’s rock and “take the midnight train going anywhere” while remembering my childhood in Detroit!

Big Guy and I had errands to run today but decided lunch and a little antiquing could be a nice reward for our efforts. After a quick stop @southsidetruevaluehardware, we headed to Kirkwood.
We needed coffee so we had to stop at Cornucopia. The store is my favorite place to explore for kitchen items, and I never fail to buy more than was on my list. We had worked up a hunger, so our lunch spot was @mikeduffys. It is always a great meal with friendly service. I tucked into their Buffalo Chicken Wrap with blue cheese dressing. The chicken was crispy and the wrap perfectly balanced with hot sauce, lettuce, and cheese. Big Guy opted for the BBQ Chicken Sandwich. He, too, felt his meal was perfect! We walked off our lunch by visiting @warson_woods_gallery followed by a quick stop @schnuckmarkets. Whew! It was a full day, but as usual, we got a lot done while having fun! Do you ever have a day that is off and you start to wonder where you left your brain? Today was that day @carondeletkitchen. I woke up with the decision to make tri-berry muffins knowing that my frozen fruit supply needed attention before its expiration date.
I should have known things were going to be interesting when I placed my soup in the crock pot and turned it on only to realize thirty minutes later that I forgot to plug it in. I thought my butter was fully soft after being out for three hours only to discover once I added it to the eggs and milk that it was not the case. Big Guy to the rescue with a double boiler and patience to get the ingredients blended and ready to be added to the dry ingredients. Despite the wacky day, the muffins baked beautifully, and I now have fresh pastries to go with our coffee in the morning. I even had enough leftovers to freeze for future morning snacks. Is this where I say take those lemons and make lemonade? St. Louis was alive with activity on this day of love. The biggest event was the Soulard Mardi Gras Bud Light Grand Parade. I know the event was well attended, which included some of my cousins, but I admit Big Guy and I were happy to be passing by during the rainstorm heading to our event of choice.
We decided to meet our beautiful niece, @abrandt1026, and her daughter at the St. Louis Birthday Bash hosted by @mohistorymuseum. We walked into the museum to outstanding music performed by @redandblackbrassband which certainly put us in the mood for a party. We were given fleur de lis beads to wear and then we danced around the main hall before joining the crowd, including Patriot the Bald Eagle from @worldbirdsanctuary, in a rousing version of Happy Birthday to our grand city! We ended our time by shopping the local makers on hand including @mrfreshglobal who blew us away with his story of being a “kid” CEO. Well done, young man! Sold on St. Louis, the museum’s gift shop, was also a required stop thanks to their excellent selection of local products. Hats off @mohistorymuseum for a magnificent event where you promised a “celebration that’s LOUD, PROUD, and all about the LOU! I am looking forward to next year! |
