We picked up our new Subaru Forester on a Tuesday from our new friends at Sunset Hills Subaru. Huge thanks to Jon, Austin, Layla, and Awais for treating these #supercoololdpeople like royalty.
Naturally, we celebrated the only way we know how, by pointing the Forester south and heading to Caledonia, Missouri, home of The Old Village Mercantile, one of the oldest still‑operating general stores in the state. A gorgeous cruise down Missouri Route 21 and a road trip well worth the miles. #subarusaturdays #sunsethillssubaru #subaruusa

Big Guy and I love to go to the farmer’s market for fresh produce. There is something special about supporting our local growers!
We do not have a large “farm,” but I also love the vegetables we grow @carondeletgarden. Big Guy made sure to get butter crunch and city lettuce going so we could shake off the winter blues and start enjoying the fruits of our labor. If you have never grown your own lettuce, try it. It is easy to grow and the joy of plucking the start of your salad from the garden is immeasurable. CHEROKEE CARAVAN
What a fun way to spend Memorial Day. We headed over to the Cherokee Caravan, the street festival all along Historic Cherokee Antique Row. We enjoyed shopping in the eclectic atmosphere and even found a few unique treasures to bring home. A fun, family-friendly Memorial Day tradition. The season for summertime food is upon us! Memorial Day weekend is always a spark for us to get grilling again!
We stopped by @legrandsmarket to load up on their cowboy brats, potato salad, and baked beans. It was busy as the butchers were stocking the cases with ribs, pork steaks, bacon, and steaks for all your grilling desires. I am just glad I stopped in early because my visits are always special when I get to spend time talking with the butchers about my ideas for upcoming meals in @carondeletkitchen. I cannot wait to plan another visit with a special meal in mind! I realized I had Gunther Gabel-Williams sauce in the freezer, so Big Guy suggested we should make a roast. We stopped by to see the butchers @legrandsmarket. When we told them our plans, it was suggested we try a coulotte which is also known as Picanha or a sirloin cap. We were promised an unforgettable meal. With plenty of marbling, this is a juicy and savory roast.
Big Guy started by adding seasoning to the meat and letting it marinate in the refrigerator. He then seared it on both sides before adding it to the pot with the sauce. He opted to cook the meat “low and slow” to make the meat perfect at serving time. It truly was fantastic with plenty of leftovers to make another meal. It is this reason we always consult our friends @legrandmarket! I have been baking up my @kingarthurbaking bread mixes before the real heat of summer hits us. I know it is Saint Louis and tomorrow could be a snowstorm!
We were getting ready to have a playdate with @abrandt1026 and her beautiful daughter so I decided to surprise them with banana bread. I appreciate that the mixes are easy and quick to make each time. I added a fresh banana, vegetable oil and eggs to the prepared mix and it was time to bake it. Forty-five minutes later and I had fresh banana bread! Perfect! Big Guy surprised me with a date night to @samssteak. I love going there because the food, service, and ambiance are perfect. We walked into the restaurant hearing Frank Sinatra singing songs with low lighting immediately setting the mood for a perfect night.
No one will be surprised that I could not eat my entire steak, so I turned my leftovers into barley steak soup. I sauteed onions, carrots, celery, garlic, and red pepper before adding my sliced pieces of steak into the pot. After adding beef broth, I also put in barley and frozen peas I had in the freezer. I served it with a side of bread and a lovely bottle of wine. It was a perfect way to continue our date night at home! |
