Who doesn’t love a good doughnut? I know I have been the recipient of great options here in St. Louis!
Big Guy suggested we should add making doughnuts to our rotation of recipes @carondeletkitchen. As luck would have it, my friends @kingarthurbaking featured mixes and a baking pan in their catalog. I was all in and purchased their apple cinnamon mix which made the perfect light and airy doughnut. I happened to have a small bottle of maple syrup, so I stirred up a quick glaze to go on top. It enhanced the excellent flavor of the doughnut and certainly put a smile on our faces! Big Guy and I have tried over the years to create our own holiday traditions such as dressing the graves of our parents. We think of them often, but this is our way of having a quiet moment “with them” during the season.
Our love of tradition is now becoming a family affair as our niece, @abrandt1026 has been brainstorming ideas with us. Last year, we baked and decorated cookies which we look forward to continuing especially as her little one gets older and can be part of the fun instead of just eating the cookies. A new tradition, we hope, is creating candles to share with our loved ones. We went all out on the scent of a pine forest to capture one memorable scent of the season. We purchased cute old fashioned candle holders along with festive coffee cups to complete our making session. I am amazed at the ease of making candles, but I fully admit we do not have the talent to balance the perfect scent yet. As one maker told me, it can take years of experimentation to get it exactly right. It is a good thing we have years to keep trying this new tradition! Is there anything better than a meatloaf on a chilly weather day? The kitchen was filled with the aromas of onions, bacon, and finally the meatloaf. Heaven.
I know family recipes vary when it comes to meatloaf, but Big Guy and I opt for adding sauteed onions and bacon to our ground chuck along with eggs and panko for binding the entire mix together. We divided the mix into three pans so we could eat one right away, freeze one for later, and create a meal for our lovely niece, @abrandt1026 to fill our bellies while we attempt to make Christmas candles. I just love days when cooking is a priority so we can show our love through food. Here’s to more days in the holiday season filling @carondeletkitchen with delicious treats for all! |
