My mom played bridge weekly for years past the point of it being a “fashionable” game. My dad was even known to “sub” in on weeks when one of the “girls” was out of town. It was usually my aunt, who is still playing weekly and online, at the ripe old age of ninety.
I do know how to play canasta, another chestnut of a card game, but I never got into bridge. When it was my mom’s turn to host, I was called into service to set up the tables and put out the small bowls of bridge mix. I am sure your first thought would be a variety of nuts, but in this case, it was licorice flavored candies which “called” my name to be eaten quickly before my mom saw me. I was delighted to see a bag of my childhood favorites when I picked up my coffee at Cornucopia. The first bite took me back to listening to the days of my mom and her friends playing bridge, gossiping, and laughing while I hid in the other room pretending not to be home while the “old” ladies played their card game. As an adult, I can only say it was my loss!
