Have you walked down the aisle at a store on the Hill with rows of bright yellow and red cans of San Marzano tomatoes? The cans are distinctive and beckon you to place them in your shopping cart.
Big Guy and I have bought a can or two over the years and enjoyed using this tomato in our cooking. It wasn’t until we watched the episode on Searching for Italy with Stanley Tucci that we got obsessed with the idea of growing these beauties in our backyard garden. If Stanley says they are the best tomatoes for sauce, who are we to argue? I can tell you Stanley is right. The tomatoes were perfect for sauce. The pulp was rich and not too watery like a bush tomato with a sauce that was deep red and unbelievably delicious. We plan to double our plants for next year. The bonus is the squirrels leave these tomatoes alone. Win!
