I grew up in Michigan, so you knew the season by the fruit on the table. I am sure you would assume apples, but cherries are also a huge crop.
I got my love of cherries from my mom. She was always the type of eater that did not mind a pit in her fruit or a shell on her nut. She was constantly on a diet, so it helped her slow down her eating and genuinely enjoy her food. I was a rambunctious kid with tons of energy, so I was more in love of the explosion of flavor when you bit into the cherry. It was also a great pastime for the kids to have a spitting competition to see who could hit the target, often a can, first. I should resurrect that game instead of spitting my pits onto a plate. The joys of summer!
