When I married the Big Guy, my MIL was known for her apple pie. As I have mentioned in the past, my cooking skills were lame in the early years of my marriage. With time, my MIL would slowly start to share her recipes with me. One of the first recipes was her apple pie. She would roll out her pastry for the pie and then open a can of apples. Ok, I realize this sounds bad but then she proceeded to doctor the apples with spices that enveloped the kitchen with smells of fall. Once I mastered her version, I had a friend in choir tell me about this fantastic recipe included with the Ready Crust Brand Pie Crust. I was intrigued and feeling braver in my little southside apartment kitchen. I bought the pie crust and the usual can of apples only to find out the recipe called for fresh cut apples. Oh yeah, I had to throw caution to the wind and go for it. Over the years, I have used a variety of apples and always doubled the crumble recipe for the top. I have even gone without the pie crust and made an apple crumble variation of the original recipe. The lesson here is to remember and look at your baking products for great recipes. In time, your MIL may give you the apple pie crown of excellence which I wear proudly at all family events!
