My Dad was never verbose about his military service. “I was in the Army,” then the conversation quickly changed to favorite television shows, movies, or what was for dinner.
When my dad passed, I found letters he wrote to his mother during basic training. In my first reading, I thought they were humorous since he would ask for candy, postage stamps, and letters. I recently read them again and realized he needed the support of his family during his service. While I do not have my grandmother’s letters, I assume she needed assurance her “little” boy was safe. On this Veterans Day, let us remember and thank our veterans and the families that supported them. They serve and sacrifice so much to allow us the freedom we enjoy each day!
