Big Guy and I are fans of old Christmas movies. Apparently, so is Carrie Underwood since she mentions them in her new song, Favorite Time of Year. The partial lyric is, “blankets and movies in black and white, together they make up this colorful life.” These movies also give you a glimpse into trends and habits of the times. It seems this year we have been really taking notice of the holiday drinks mentioned in the movies. We are always looking for fun drink recipes to share with our family and friends. In Bishop’s Wife, Gary Grant as the angel orders stingers for the ladies. I admit I knew what a stinger was as my parents would order them from time to time. The basic recipe is 3 ounces of brandy and 1 ounce of white crème de menthe. As we did our research, we found a variety of stinger recipes depending on your alcohol preference. The other drink mentioned was in Beyond Tomorrow which is also titled Beyond Christmas. The gentlemen were drinking Tom and Jerry’s. That got our attention, and it was eye opening to find out the drink’s main ingredients were a batter made of eggs, sugar, and vanilla. The batter is added to a cup of hot water and a liquor of your choice. It appears this drink was very popular by the number of special bowls and cups being sold on eBay! I can’t wait to continue our viewing of the old movies for more great drink ideas. Once we are all able to gather again, I may just have to buy that punch bowl and cups for the holidays!
