Big Guy and I have been influenced by our careers in education in that we believe in being life-long learners. We do enjoy learning about food and the stories of those who make it, so call us nerds, but we love a good conversation.
Recently, PBS streamed a special show featuring Southern home cooks and storytellers. SOLD! We enjoyed hearing how food shaped the lives of the four individuals on the show. I want to share one story that struck home, but also gave my Big Guy needed information to defend his love of Duke’s Real Mayonnaise. The conversation turned to Duke’s vs. Hellman’s, which is fighting words in many households depending on your region. In this case, the empirical evidence of Duke’s leading the pack is they use apple cider AND white vinegar along with additional egg yolks. They are also, as far as we can tell, the only store-bought Mayo without added sugar! I know I immediately wondered if the secret to Duke’s was just let out of the vault, but the home cook assured us “everyone” in the south knows what gives Duke’s it “twang.” Now, we do too!
