I vividly remember one night my mom made dinner and realized she had run out of catsup. What to do? She decided she would mix various ingredients and boldly declare it real catsup using all her acting skills. Unfortunately, it didn’t work since the flavor was off and my brother and I were not falling for anything that didn’t come in the proper bottle. It’s funny but I don’t remember my dad’s reaction, but I am sure he pulled out the stops and gave a bravura performance with my mom. Now, as my adult self, I give my mom credit for trying to make catsup and for NOT placing it in the old catsup bottle. Sorry, at the time this was not unusual and grocery stores were not just around the corner. I am sad to think we all missed the opportunity to really understand how exciting creating food and flavors could be in the kitchen. Unlike my mom, I have come to enjoy cooking and I find myself reviving my memories of past “failures” in the kitchen or going through family recipes to make things new. So, thanks Mom, for giving me the memory to try new things in the kitchen. And, if they fail, to see the humor in it and the goal to find a better recipe.
