I can’t believe it has taken me most of my adult life to figure out the benefits and joy of drinking a good cup of coffee in the morning. Granted, my favorite part of the day now is drinking coffee and reading my newspapers. Old school indeed but the time spent reading and talking about the news is something invigorating to Big Guy and me. Sure, a lot of the news is not so good but there are still plenty of positive stories out there if you look for them. If you wish to realize the significance of coffee and the “smallness” of the world, you need only look to the history of coffee. Did you know you can trace its heritage back centuries to the ancient coffee forests on the Ethiopian plateau? The legend claims a goat herder named Kaldi first discovered the potential of these beans when he noticed his goats became very energetic after eating the berries and had trouble sleeping at night. Kaldi shared his observation with the abbot of a local monastery who made a drink from the berries to keep him alert through evening prayer. It was not long after the abbot share his discovery and word of this berry spread east to the Arabian peninsula and ultimately the world. I realize I am behind the curve on coffee since it appears my younger friends are obsessed with their daily Starbucks or fancy coffee makers sitting on their kitchen counters. I guess I used to think coffee was something my parents drank in the morning and after dinner, therefore, it couldn’t be good. Of course, I used to think the same thing about alcohol but that is a different blog.
