Craig Wilson, formerly a columnist for USA Today, wrote about vacations and the purchases of sombreros. In the article, he equated sombreros as being an unnecessary buy to remember your vacation. You know, something big and gaudy that makes no sense once you get it home. Big Guy and I took this article to heart and always talked about it when we would look at things while on vacation. You can imagine our laughter when we bought a sombrero ornament as a remembrance of our trip to Mexico for our niece’s destination wedding. I was reminded of this purchase as I unpacked my ornament box to decorate my tree. In this case, the sombrero was representative not only of the entire trip, but the marketplace created in our resort with locals brought in to cook classic food from the region. It was a magic night with outstanding food and the perfect sunset…until the storm rolled in. Even after we all ran for cover, the evening was still special. This is one time a sombrero was the perfect item to remember a family wedding as well as the food and people of Mexico.
