I tend to drink my scotch neat, but my bourbon whiskey with a mixer. I think my good neighbor to the east just shuddered in horror!
I think he will forgive me for enjoying the annual drink of the Kentucky Derby…the mint julep. It is mostly bourbon whiskey and simple syrup with a big piece of mint for decoration. There is nothing more appropriate to drink than this emblematic beverage to watch the parade of horses and riders trotting toward the track getting ready for the annual run for the roses in this most prestigious horse race. I have always wondered if the reason the women wear large hats is to hide their tears of joy or sorrow. At least with a mint julep in hand, they can drown their sorrows for picking the wrong horse like me…AGAIN!
