When Big Guy and I dreamed up this blog, we were originally thinking about including my grandma in the title since she was always cooking and baking in her kitchen. Obviously, she is a big part of my inspiration, but Carondelet Kitchen was the perfect name since I am writing about my cooking journey.
I love our Carondelet Garden which is totally a tradition created by Big Guy and me. My parents loved to plant flowers, but rarely tried to make an herb or vegetable garden. My grandma was the same way, but she was always busy with her quilting bees, cooking, and baking, and doing volunteer work for the USO. I remember my grandparents’ house well, but they were not really into gardening. The only exception were special plants which consisted of one rose bush and my grandma’s favorite plant which I called a money plant since they always had beautiful silver dollar seed pods. We were ready to haunt the local nurseries, but Big Guy decided to grow them from seed. We did find out the plant is known as honesty, dollar plant, money plant, and silver dollar. I am happy to say in our second season we now have beautiful plants with purple flowers and the eruption of silver dollars. It has become a terrific addition to our garden and reminds me of my grandma every time I look out the window.
