Big Guy and I enjoy sandwiches but elevating them to a warm dish certainly makes it special. I have long been a fan of the French sandwich, Croque Madame, which includes bread, ham, eggs, and a lovely mornay sauce. When I recently saw a post about Croque Monsieur, using the same ingredients minus the egg, I knew we had to do our twist on this classic dish.
Big Guy grabbed the ingredients including an egg, so he could make a Monte Cristo sandwich which is an egg-dipped ham and cheese sandwich. Fun fact after doing my research, but the Monte Cristo is considered a variation of the Croque Monsieur. It seems giving it a different name made this French classic more approachable for the American cook. I do not wish to start a debate on who made it first, so I’ll just say who cares as it is delicious. Yum!
