When I started dating the Big Guy, I was introduced to new food and drinks that I never had as a kid growing up in Michigan. Sweet tea? Pork steaks? And dog? Don’t panic, it was the family name for bologna.
I fell in love with sweet tea, but I could never understand why it was better at my MIL’s house and not out in restaurants. I boldly asked her one day for her recipe and its secret. MAJOR SUGAR! My jaw hit the floor when I realized she put in four cups of sugar to one pitcher of tea. No wonder I was always buzzing on a sugar high every time we had dinner at their house! I have not repeated that recipe, but one that I am sure will get you all talking is Southern Living’s recipe for perfect sweet tea. Ya’ll, it calls for baking soda! The claim is the baking soda “combats any bitterness and keeps the tea from turning cloudy when chilled.” I best my MIL would have never put that ingredient in her tea!
